(n) | Program 51

In many notations (n) is used to represent a value for which a question is to be resolved. In Program 51 the solution is the convergence between Art, Technology, Science and Culture. The (n) implies a variable. It's use illustrates the evolving formulations that characterizes technological change. It anticipates a rich future and acknowledges the past. Most importantly it represents a flexible system that engages emerging paradigms and technological change, Program 51 students learn to use multiple strategies to investigate how technology and aesthetics can be leveraged to create hybridized projects that expand, humanize and critique how technology impacts our lives.

An open source, collaborative learning environment encourages development of the interdisciplinary strategies necessary to create complex/multifaceted works. The faculty work with other programs within CCA such as the MFA program, Sculpture and Interaction Design to insure students have intellectual latitude towards developing a transdisciplinary skill set. The department also coordinates classes with other colleges and institutions to allow students to work in real world, real time problem solving and experimentation.
In classes that combine hands on projects in electronics, fabrication and programming with independent research and in-class discussion, students gain a thorough understanding of historical and contemporary practices in media.

Program 51 student's current research includes: programing interactive media and responsive sculpture, data mining, visualizing and/or sonifying data, circuit bending, composing multi-channel audio-scapes, investigating smart materials, crafting tangible interfaces, weaving extreme textiles, jamming culture, instantiating collaborative networks, and integrating Web 2.0 APIs to create real time Flickr pages or hacking and mashing web sites.

CCA's location in the San Francisco Bay Area cannot be over emphasized. The benefits derived from the proximity to Silicon Valley are obvious. The geek factor here is off the chart and as such support festivals, institutions and lecture series in the Bay Area.
